Surge in Bookings from China to North America|Tariff Cuts Trigger Major Logistics Shifts | IINO san's Logistics News

Today’s highlights include a surge in China-to-North America bookings and how shipping companies are responding flexibly to increased demand.

Recently, there’s been a noticeable uptick in ocean freight activity from China to North America. The key driver? Fluctuations in demand linked to changing U.S.-China tariff policies.

◆ U.S.-China Tariff Relief Sparks Sudden Booking Spike

The recent surge was triggered by a temporary tariff reduction agreed upon by the U.S. and Chinese governments.

Specifically, a 115% tariff on exports from China was reduced for a limited 90-day period.

Many shippers have rushed to move goods ahead of the deadline, resulting in a 50% increase in bookings compared to the previous four weeks.

Compared to pre-tariff periods, the growth is in double digits.

◆ Carriers Respond Quickly with Larger Vessels

While some feared a shortage of vessel supply, shipping lines have already taken action.

Previously, smaller vessels were used due to decreased demand.

However, many routes are now seeing a shift to larger vessels.

Alliances among carriers are also enabling rapid schedule adjustments and capacity optimization to accommodate the surge.

◆ Potential Congestion at U.S. Ports

One growing concern is congestion at U.S. ports.

With a sudden rise in cargo volumes, major ports like Los Angeles may experience backlogs.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 110 ships were reported waiting offshore—similar delays could resurface.

This would cause customs clearance delays, delivery disruptions, and higher freight rates.

◆ Outlook and Key Considerations

The tariff cut is only valid for 90 days, which has fueled a short-term rush in exports.

Looking ahead, here are two critical areas of focus:

・How well U.S. ports can handle peak cargo volume
・Potential rate hikes and space shortages

To avoid issues, it will be crucial to closely monitor U.S. port operations and China’s export trends and plan logistics strategically.
